Why Is Low Attack Good in Pokémon GO PvP?
Seeing a Pokémon with a 0 Attack IV can feel disappointing. For Great League and Ultra League, it can actually be exactly what you want.
Low Attack doesn’t somehow make a Pokémon stronger. It’s that Attack increases CP more than Defense and HP do. When there’s a CP limit, that matters.
The CP Limit Changes Everything
Great League caps at 1,500 CP. Ultra League at 2,500. Once you hit the cap, any further power-up makes the Pokémon ineligible.
A high Attack IV gains CP faster, so the Pokémon can hit the limit at a lower level. Lower Attack may let the same Pokémon climb a few more levels before crossing the cap — and those extra levels add Defense and HP too.
That’s the whole trick.
A Simple Way to Think About It
Imagine two versions of the same Pokémon.
Pokémon A
- high Attack
- reaches 1,500 CP sooner
May have the prettier appraisal.
Pokémon B
- lower Attack
- can be powered up further
- ends up with more Defense and HP
May have more useful total stats in Great League.
That’s why so many PvP IV spreads look something like:
But those aren’t universal targets. What Are the Best IVs for PvP? covers what to aim for in each league.
Is 0 Attack Always Better?
No. This is where the shortcut gets people into trouble.
Some Pokémon don’t reach the cap easily. If it can be fully powered up and still stays under, lowering Attack gives you little or nothing.
Others benefit from extra Attack because of:
- Charged Move Priority
- damage breakpoints
- mirror matches
- specific matchups
And in Master League, where there’s normally no cap, you want high IVs across the board. A 15 Attack IV is a good thing there.
Why Do So Many Rank #1 Pokémon Have Low Attack?
PvP IV rankings usually favor stat product — a Pokémon’s final Attack, Defense and HP combined. Lowering Attack can buy enough extra levels that the Pokémon ends up with more total stats under the cap. So a low-Attack spread can rank above a 15/15/15.
Attack isn’t a bad stat. The CP formula just makes it more expensive. For the fuller picture, see Pokémon GO PvP IVs Explained.
Low Attack vs Higher Attack
A bulky low-Attack build is often a solid general-purpose option. But higher Attack has its uses.
When both players throw a Charged Move at the same moment, the Pokémon with higher Attack gets Charged Move Priority. A little extra Attack can also change how much damage a Fast or Charged Move does in a particular matchup.
So the real question isn’t “is low Attack better?” It’s which IV spread works best for this Pokémon in this league?
Check Before You Transfer It
An ugly-looking appraisal can still be excellent for PvP. Before transferring a low-Attack Pokémon, run it through the PoGoCoach IV Calculator to see its PvP IV rank, stat product, maximum CP, best league and how much Attack it gives up.
Check Your PvP IVsThe Short Version
Low Attack can be good in Great League and Ultra League because it may let a Pokémon reach a higher level while staying under the CP cap. More Defense, more HP, more total stats.
But it isn’t automatically better. The exact answer depends on the Pokémon.
