Team Building Guide
How to Build a Pokémon GO PvP Team
A good PvP team isn’t just three highly ranked Pokémon. They have to work together.
The easiest start is one Pokémon you want to use, then two questions: what beats it? And what covers those weaknesses? That gets you much closer to a real team than grabbing the top three from a ranking list.
Start With One Pokémon
Pick something that’s actually useful in the league you want to play — a strong meta pick, something you already have built, or just a Pokémon you enjoy. Then look at its difficult matchups.
If your lead struggles badly against certain types or common Pokémon, your second and third picks should give you ways to handle them. You don’t need to cover every Pokémon in the game. You need a team that doesn’t collapse to one common threat.
Give Each Pokémon a Job
Your three don’t need to do the same thing. Thinking in roles helps:
Lead
The Pokémon you're comfortable starting with.
Switch
What you bring in when the lead goes badly.
Closer
Gets dangerous late, often when shields are low.
These roles are flexible. The same Pokémon can fill more than one depending on the team.
Check Your Shared Weaknesses
This is where a lot of teams fail. If two — or all three — of your Pokémon struggle against the same common opponent, it gets very hard to play around, even if each one looks good on its own. Look for repeated weaknesses:
- What beats my lead?
- Can either Pokémon in the back handle it?
- Is there anything that beats almost my entire team?
- Do I have an answer to common meta Pokémon?
How to Find Weaknesses in Your PvP Team walks through this check step by step.
Think Beyond Types
Type coverage matters, but it’s not the whole story. Movesets, bulk, energy generation and actual matchup results matter too. A Pokémon can have the right type on paper and still lose the fight. That’s why team building works better with real matchup data than a type chart alone.
ABC or ABB?
Two common structures. An ABC team uses three Pokémon with different roles and coverage. An ABB team has two in the back that share a weakness or role — the first B draws out their main counter so the second B has an easier time later.
Neither is automatically better. ABC vs ABB Teams Explained goes through how each one is actually played.
Don’t Chase Perfect Coverage
No three-Pokémon team beats everything. Trying to delete every weakness usually creates a new one somewhere else. Aim for:
- reasonable coverage
- a clear plan for bad leads
- useful safe-switch options
- a win condition for the endgame
Know what your team wants to do when things go well — and what it does when they don’t.
Test the Team, Then Adjust It
Don’t replace a Pokémon after every loss. Play enough battles to notice patterns. If the same opponent or type keeps causing trouble, that’s useful information.
The problem might be the team. It might also be alignment, shields, energy or how you’re playing the matchup — see Shield Advantage vs Switch Advantage. Change one thing at a time.
