PvP Basics
What Does Battle Rating Mean in Pokémon GO PvP?
A Battle Rating shows how strongly one Pokémon performs in a simulated matchup — not just whether it wins or loses. In PvPoke-style matchup data it runs from 0 to 1,000.
The number to remember is 500. Above it is a winning simulated matchup, below it a losing one — and how far from 500 tells you something too.
What Does a 500 Battle Rating Mean?
Around 500 is an extremely close matchup — neither side finishes with a big advantage. 510 is technically a win, but much tighter than 850. 490 is a narrow loss; 150 is a very poor matchup under those simulation conditions.
The scale is continuous. There’s no magic line where “good” starts.
How Is Battle Rating Calculated?
PvPoke builds it from two parts: how much of the opponent’s HP you remove, and how much of your own HP is left.
That gives the 0–1,000 range. A dominant win scores higher than a win where the Pokémon barely survives.
Why It Beats a Simple Win or Loss
Your Pokémon wins two matchups. In one it survives with plenty of HP, in the other with almost nothing. Both are wins — not equally good ones. Battle Rating shows the difference, which helps when comparing:
- counters
- team coverage
- movesets
- IV spreads
- different shield scenarios
A High Rating Is Not a Guaranteed Win
A 700 rating does not mean “you win 70% of the time.”
It’s not a probability. It describes one simulated matchup under the chosen conditions.
Real battles include things the basic result can’t fully predict:
- starting energy and HP
- shield decisions
- switching and baiting
- move timing
- IV differences
- player decisions
Check the Shield Scenario
Battle Rating can swing a lot with shields. A Pokémon might win 0 vs 0 and lose 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2. Always know which shield scenario a number comes from — otherwise it can mislead you. It’s also a big part of finding weaknesses in your team.
Battle Rating vs PvP IV Rank
Battle Rating
Describes a simulated matchup between two Pokémon.
PvP IV Rank
Compares IV combinations of the same Pokémon.
A Pokémon can have Rank #1 IVs and still have a terrible Battle Rating into its counter. More on the other number in What Does PvP IV Rank Mean?
How PoGoCoach Uses Matchup Information
The PvP Battle Assistant uses matchup data to show whether your Pokémon has a favorable or unfavorable battle against what you’re facing — as guidance, not a guaranteed prediction. Pair it with counting Fast Moves and you’ll read matchups much faster.
