What Does PvP IV Rank Mean in Pokémon GO?

If your Pokémon shows Rank #25, that doesn’t mean it’s the 25th-best Pokémon in the league. It means its IV spread ranks 25th against the other IV combinations of the same Pokémon, usually for one specific league.

That distinction matters.

Where Does the Rank Come From?

Attack, Defense and HP IVs each run from 0 to 15. That gives 16 × 16 × 16 = 4,096 possible IV combinations.

A PvP IV calculator works out the stats each spread reaches under the league’s CP limit, then ranks them — in most calculators, mainly by stat product.

So Rank #1 usually means the highest-stat-product spread under those settings. Rank #100 means 99 spreads ranked ahead of it. Which doesn’t make it bad.

Rank #1 Does Not Mean #1 in the League

Completely different things. You can have a Rank #1 spread of something that barely sees play in the current meta — or a Rank #200 of an excellent meta Pokémon and get plenty of use out of it.

What Is Stat Product?

Stat product compares the final stats of different spreads. It’s essentially Attack × Defense × HP.

In CP-capped leagues, a higher stat product often favors more Defense and HP — one reason so many top Great League spreads have low Attack. More on that in Why Is Low Attack Good in Pokémon GO PvP?

Is Rank #1 Always the Best Version?

Not for every situation. It usually gives excellent overall stats, but battles aren’t decided by stat product alone. A slightly higher-Attack spread might:

  • win Charged Move Priority
  • reach a damage breakpoint
  • perform differently in the mirror match

A bulkier spread, meanwhile, may survive damage the higher-Attack version can’t.

Treat Rank #1 as a benchmark, not proof that every other spread is bad. Pokémon GO PvP IVs Explained goes deeper on the trade-offs.

Is Rank #50 Good?

Often, yes. So can Rank #100.

The number alone doesn’t tell you how big the stat gap actually is. For one Pokémon, Rank #1 and Rank #50 are almost identical. For another, the difference is bigger.

If you already have a good one built, check the real stats before spending resources just to improve the number next to “Rank”.

Does PvP IV Rank Change Between Leagues?

Yes. The same spread can rank very differently depending on the CP limit — great for Great League, poor for Ultra League. Master League is different again: no cap, so maximum IVs matter much more. For what to aim for in each, see What Are the Best IVs for PvP?

Always check the right league.

Check Your IV Rank

One Thing to Remember

A PvP IV rank tells you how an IV spread compares with other spreads of the same Pokémon. It doesn’t tell you whether the Pokémon itself is good.

That’s the part worth remembering.
